Dec 2017 - May 2018: Hawaii Photo Shoot

Wow, I can't believe another half year has already gone by.  A lot has happened since the last post.

Our refinance for our rental property finally went through so Mommy has the green light to change jobs.

She also finalized a job offer with a custom home builder.  It will be significantly less money than her current job but it's always been a dream of hers to pursue her interest in house building.  Both the company and she doesn't think she'll be in this starter position for long.

The Christmas holidays was  chill period of mostly staying at home.

Mommy's last day of work was January 5 and her new job agreed to postponing her start date to February 6.

January 8th, we welcomed a new addition to the Lo Family with Eliot Henry Lo!  No, no more kids for Phil and me, this is our brand new nephew!

Mommy also spent a crazy month basically clearing out and organizing the house.

Avery had her 7 year checkup at a healthy 45.5" and 49.5 pounds.  Still puts her in the 10%.

We did do a little trip up to Tahoe.  Mommy actually tried to ski again after 20 years!  She was aching after half a day and just wanted to play in the snow with Conner after that.

February was a big month for Conner as his school put him on potty training.  He has to be diaper-free by the time the Caterpillar class moves up to the Ladybug class or else he stays behind.  So we bought pull-ups and told them to go at it.

In March, Grandma Lo came to stay with us for a month.  No more cooking for Mommy, yah!

Avery was sent home with lice.  We did the whole lice shampoo and combing deal.  And also decided to cut off most of her hair.  I think she looks way cuter with short hair.

Zach participated in his school's science fair with our neighborhood schoolmate.

April was a great month as we went to Oahu for a week-long vacation.  The kids enjoyed playing on the beach and snorkeling.  We even booked a professional photo shoot.  Some of the highlight photos are included below.  We also fun on a catamaran ride.

Unfortunately, it was raining and muggy/sprinkling most of the time we were there.  But we made the best of it and had a lot of fun trying different Hawaiian food.

Coming back from vacation was not as fun.

One of Mommy's project managers left and she had to take over babysitting a project.  It's never fun taking over and trying to figure out what happened.

In addition, we had problems at our rental as bees invaded!  After we had the beekeeper take away the bees, the ceiling patch fell down, and over a hundred leftover bees flooded their bedroom.  To exacerbate the problem, my parents were traveling in Europe for a month.  So Phil had to rush up there to patch the ceiling hole, only to realize that none of our keys worked.  He tried to get the keys from my parents' place but they had locked the deadbolt and he couldn't get in.  He even climbed up to a second-story window to get in but then there were too many keys and none of them worked.  Finally, he had to go back up during the weekend to do the work.

In addition, the exterior wood staircase broke from rot.  Luckily, it broke right past the first landing so our tenants could still get in and out and use the laundry room.  So, that problem fell down in priority.  After getting some exorbitant bids, we were able to schedule the complete replacement to be done in May.

It looks like the next few months will also not be relaxing as the structural plans were submitted to Berkeley for the seismic retrofit of the rental.  We're in the process of obtaining bids with the idea of doing the work during July-August.  This would have the least impact on the student tenants.

We're going to try to sprinkle some fun in there as well with a camping weekend to kick the summer off.  And possibly a trip to visit the new nephew in August before school starts.

On the potty training front, it went surprisingly well.  After a week or two, the school requested underwear and Conner is now diaper free in school.  He has had 1-2 accidents but that's already pretty good!  At home, we keep him in pull-ups just because we're not good at making him go to the bathroom regularly.  He's even gone a few times on his own.

However, we are still working on having him go to the potty for number 2.  It's been about three months and we've only had success 3-4 times.

Good thing is that he will be able to graduate with the rest of his class up to the Ladybug class in July!

In May, we noticed Zach having a hard time reading words at a distance so we pulled him in for an eye exam.  Well, it was not good... we signed up for OrthoK (expensive) which basically is a hard contact lens that kids wear at night.  The idea is that the lens shapes the cornea while you sleep so you can go without glasses for the rest of the day.  We'll see how that goes.
